The Carolyn D. McGolerick Scholarship Application

McDaniel College has partnered with The Community Foundation of Frederick County to award graduate scholarships in school librarianship. The Carolyn D. McGolerick Scholarship Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation, was established by the late Carolyn D. McGolerick, a McDaniel alumna who served as a librarian at Fort Detrick and at St. John’s School in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The application deadline is March 15. Award decisions will be made by June 1. All scholarships are awarded and must be used for the following academic year (fall, spring, summer).

Currently enrolled students, newly admitted students, and those considering joining the Master of Science in School Librarianship program are eligible to apply. However, students must be fully admitted to the MS in School Librarianship program by March 15 to be considered for the scholarship. While some preference is given to Frederick County residents, graduates of Frederick County high schools, or current employees of Frederick County schools, the McGolerick Scholarship welcomes applicants from all geographic areas. Previous scholarship recipients may reapply each spring for additional funding for subsequent years.

Currently enrolled students and newly admitted students are eligible to apply. Students can be eligible for funding each year but must reapply annually.

This scholarship application must be submitted no later than 11:59 pm on March 15.

Admission to the Master of Science in School Librarianship program must be finalized by March 15.

Scholarship Criteria for Applicants Who Have Not Taken SLM Courses

You must meet the admission requirements for the SLM Program, and the materials that you submit for admission will then be used to determine suitability for the scholarship. The admission requirements are:

Application for graduate study
Official transcripts conferring bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3.0 GPA from an accredited institution
Current and valid teaching certificate or official transcript showing completion of education courses as stated by MSDE for the SLM certification
An essay of approximately 250 words describing the applicant’s professional goals as they relate to the SLM professional roles as leader, teacher, and information specialist as identified by the American Association of School Librarians
Three completed reference forms with at least one from the applicant’s principal
A submitted essay for the McGolerick SLM Scholarship using the online link below.
